This blog post is for people who are looking to purchase software or have their licenses renewed. It’s impressive to see the variety of companies that are now trying to sell CAD programs. This year alone, Autodesk has released their full suite of products at different price points while also continuing with their annual release of AutoCAD and 3ds Max, both at the “middle-to-high end” segment for this industry. Beginning with Revit LT Suite 2015 (a product focused on architects), this post will cover other major software vendors in CAD like Bentley Systems or Nemetschek North America (NEMA). All of these products are available through normal resellers, online stores, resellers of the major software vendors. There is no need to look outside of your local area! The key difference between the various CAD programs is the "Engine" that they use. These are extensively documented in each program's Help files or online at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAD_engine where you'll find dozens of links to specialized wikis on specific engines. To give you some examples, AutoCAD (starting with version 2010) uses a proprietary 3D design engine called Autodesk Design Review (or dR for short). dR is based on the open source Unigraphics engine which has been available for many years. On the other hand, AutoCAD Architecture (starting with version 2013) uses Autodesk's new mArchitecture 3D engine. mArchitecture is an open source 3D design engine that has been available since 2008. AutoCAD mArchitecture is not the only open source CAD program that Autodesk uses to power CAD products. "Geometry Manager" technology from Natura3D was implemented into AutoCAD Architecture starting with version 2014 and now also powers AutoCAD LT. As shown in the image below, one interesting example of how these engines are being used are with 3D PDFs. This allows for users to save .pdf files that they can then email to many people or put on websites. The "Big Four" CAD programs are most likely the same software vendors listed in your contracts with your company. The following is a list of most of their major CAD products with links to the official website where you can find pricing information. CAD Manager is an online service that can be used to keep track of all of these products at one centralized location. There are no advertisements or advertisements of any kind on this blog or website. To view the ever-growing list of CAD vendors, feel free to visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Computer-aided_design_software . It is not uncommon for companies to have special agreements with their Software Vendors that are not available to the general public. These could be for student discounts, specific pricing agreements, etc... Click here for a more detailed discussion on how you can obtain your software at a reduced price.
