While the Remote Software Upgrade requires vehicles to communicate directly with BMW servers in order to download an upgrade package, with the exception of the unique vehicle identification number (VIN) needed to identify a vehicle, no user-specific or private data is ever exchanged or stored, and exchanges are always encrypted.
